Water, Water, Everywhere...

For residents of north Richmond, a day's worth of torrential rain can only mean one thing...

..Battery Park is flooded again.

Happy friggin' New Year. :/

Way back in the bad old days this neighborhood fell into neglect (after blockbusting and subsequent 'white flight' rendered it a middle class Black neighborhood with stagnant property values). Not surprisingly, some brilliant fellow decided that it was a great place to build a landfill....right over top of a vital sewer line. Doh! In recent years the neighborhood has recovered from a lot of the neglect, but is now facing the legacy of 40+ years of stupid and class based city planning decisions. The landfill became a city golf course but that sewer line was still buried under 80 ft of landfill. It completely collapsed in August, when Ernesto hit, backing up rainwater and sewage into the park. The city has set up pumps to keep rainwater from escaping the park while they work to build a bypass sewer line. That will take at least a year. So the park is basically off limits to all but city workers and haz-mat crews.
